The Boston Marathon is one of the oldest sporting events in the United States and has celebrated it's 100th anniversary in 1996. It is held each year on the 3rd Monday of April (Patriots Day). The BOSTON ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION has been the organizer of the marathon since it began in 1897, when 15 runners started and 10 finished the race. The races starts in Hopkington and courses 26.2 miles through numerous cities and towns over "heatbreak hill" and ending in Boston's Copley Square.
