Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art
The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art is one of the largest centers for contemporary visual art and performing arts in the United States.
Harnessing its industrial roots to redefine the gallery experience, MASS MoCA is a titan of the art world. Located in the heart of the Berkshires, it is a 19th-century factory complex reborn as a playground for monumental creativity.
The Architecture
- Scale: Featuring 250,000 square feet of gallery space across 26 historic buildings.
- History: The site was originally the Arnold Print Works (1860-1942) and later the Sprague Electric Company (1942-1985).
- Design: Architects intentionally left the "patina" of industry-exposed brick and massive timber columns-creating an authentic backdrop for modern art.
Long-Term Installations
- Sol LeWitt: A three-story retrospective of 105 wall drawings on view through 2043.
- James Turrell: "Into the Light" features immersive light installations that dissolve your sense of depth.
- Anselm Kiefer: A dedicated building housing massive, heavy-duty sculptures and paintings.
Performing Arts & Events
About 50% of the museum's resources go toward the performing arts. It is the permanent home of Wilco's Solid Sound Festival and the FreshGrass bluegrass festival. The museum also hosts artists-in-residence, allowing visitors to see the creative process of dance and theater before it hits the global stage.
